EVALUATING THE CAPACITY OF AUSTRALIAN FORESTS TO COPE WITH HEATWAVES AND CLIMATIC WARMING (PhD)

ACADEMIC SUPERVISORS: Belinda Medlyn, Kristine Crous (Western Sydney University)
END-USER SUPERVISORS: Ross Peacock, NSW NPWS
START DATE: July 2023

Process-based models are widely used to predict vegetation responses to climate change, but these models omit key processes by which plants respond to elevated temperatures. This PhD project integrates meta-analysis, field-based physiological measurements, and modelling at plant and ecosystem scales to improve predictions of how warming will impact forest growth. These improved predictions will enable park managers to prioritise resources for vulnerable ecosystems and to combat adverse effects of climate change pre-emptively.
