UNDERSTANDING PRESENT & FUTURE IMPACTS OF CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER
PROJECT LEAD: Jason Sharples
LEAD INSTITUTION: University of New South Wales
END-USER LEAD AGENCY: NSW RFS
PROJECT SIZE: Large >$200,000
DURATION: 3 years
START DATE: January 2025
This project will enhance our understanding of critical fire weather over south-eastern Australia, with a particular focus on:
- Heatwave frequency and severity and its role in compound events (e.g., drought)
- Foehn winds and isentropic drawdown
- Extreme drying events
- Enhanced atmospheric instability
- Other cold front interactions.
Researchers will investigate the synoptic mechanisms underpinning these phenomena and develop a historical climatology of their occurrence. This historical information and mechanistic understanding will then be combined with climate change projections to develop an understanding of how the occurrence of these phenomena is likely to change into the future.
