TO BURN OR NOT TO BURN? UNDERSTANDING DECISION-MAKING, NAVIGATING COMPLEXITY, AND SUPPORT NEEDS AMONG PRESCRIBED BURNING PRACTITIONERS IN NSW

PROJECT LEAD: Jessica Weir
LEAD INSTITUTION: Western Sydney University
END-USER LEAD AGENCY: RFS, DCCEEW-NPWS
PROJECT SIZE: Medium <$200,000
DURATION: 2.5 years
START DATE: 2025

Prescribed burning is a key tool in managing bushfire risks. Prescribed burning is undertaken by RFS volunteers and agency staff trained to conduct prescribed burns. These volunteers and staff must make decisions about a prescribed burn on short timeframes and in dynamic and often complex circumstances. Their decisions include the decision to proceed (or not) with a burn plan. This project is about how they get to that decision and oversee its consequences. It will investigate how they navigate this complexity, including using different forms of knowledge and information. It will also investigate their experience before, during, and after a prescribed burn. The project will provide evidence and insights to assist agencies in recruiting, retaining, training, and supporting those who implement prescribed burning.
