TO BURN OR NOT TO BURN? UNDERSTANDING DECISION-MAKING AMONG PRESCRIBED BURNING PRACTITIONERS IN NSW
PROJECT LEAD: Jessica Weir
LEAD INSTITUTION: Western Sydney University
END-USER LEAD AGENCY: RFS, DCCEEW-NPWS
PROJECT SIZE: Medium <$200,000
DURATION: 2.5 years
START DATE: 2026
Prescribed burning is a key tool in hazard reduction to manage bushfire risk, as undertaken by qualified staff and volunteers from different agencies and departments. Each time they must decide to ‘go or no-go’ with a planned burn. This involves weighing up the risks with the operational objectives, according to local conditions on the day.
This project investigates what information, tools and other supports they use and find useful in making that decision. The project will provide evidence to assist in retaining, training, and supporting those who make these decisions, and, thus, supporting hazard reduction burns.
