This PhD research project focuses on the sensitivity of Gondwana rainforest trees to drought and fire, combining field surveys with physiological measurements to understand tree mortality and recovery. Rainforest species are highly drought-sensitive, having evolved under consistently wet conditions, yet climate change is driving longer droughts and more intense fires. This work examines how burn severity shapes post-fire mortality and regenerations. Even five years since fire, recovery remains incomplete, with elevated mortality persisting across burnt areas. This research provides critical insight for predicting and managing the future of these ancient forests under increasing climate change extremes.
