ON COUNTRY FIRE: PLANT SPECIES RESPONSE AND CULTURAL BURNING ON YUIN COUNTRY

PROJECT LEAD: Mark Ooi
LEAD INSTITUTION: University of New South Wales
END-USER LEAD AGENCY: NSW DCCEEW
PROJECT SIZE: Medium >$50,000
DURATION: 2 years
START DATE: September 2025

Fire is a core part of Indigenous culture and one of the primary drivers of ecosystem dynamics. Plants are adapted to the fire regime, and changes to any aspect of this regime, including frequency, season and severity, could mediate which species persist.

Although fire is widely recognised as a key tool for land management, identifying fire regimes that meet the needs of cultural wellbeing and biodiversity conservation remain critical questions. This project is focused on research, analysis and reporting from a range of Cultural fire and plant projects, in particular to understand Cultural burn intensities and frequencies, and the interactions with plant species response and persistence.
