DYNAMICS OF MULTI-DAY RAINFALL EXTREMES

PROJECT LEADS: Jason Evans, Fiona Johnson
LEAD INSTITUTION: University of New South Wales
END-USER LEAD AGENCY: NSW DCCEEW
PROJECT SIZE: Large >$200,000
DURATION: 2 years
START DATE: March 2025

Weather catastrophes like the 2022 floods are projected to become more intense and more frequent in the future. However, there is no existing theory to explain the underlying dynamics of such stalling systems, and climate models show strong biases in their representation. This makes future projections extremely uncertain.

This project will work towards filling the vital knowledge gap regarding what controls extreme precipitation on consecutive days, and how such events might impact southeastern Australia in general and NSW in particular in the future. (Image: Adobe Stock Photo
