In the spirit of co-design, BNHRC Director A/Prof Rachael Nolan and DCCEEW Principal Project Officer Dr Kat Haynes co-presented on the Centre’s work to a national audience.
Each year the Australasian Fire and Emergency Service Authorities Council (AFAC) holds ‘Australasia’s largest and most comprehensive emergency management conference and exhibition’. It attracts around 5,000 delegates annually.
Held from 3-6 September 2024 at the International Conference Centre in Sydney, the opening day was themed ‘Research and Innovation’ – an ideal opportunity for the BNHRC’s approach to take the stage.
A/Prof Nolan and Dr Haynes discussed the challenges and opportunities that the BNHRC’s commitment to co-design has presented since launching in early 2023.
Though co-design meant that research took time, they noted, it was critical in ensuring end-users were involved in the process from start to finish. [PS1]
Dr Charuni Pathmeswaran from DCCEEW’s Knowledge Exchange Office also had the chance to present in plenary later that day, focusing on the BNHRC Climate and Weather Node Master’s program. Each current student was able to outline their research projects to the audience on video.
The next AFAC conference will take place at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre from 26-29 August 2025.
